Phi Alpha Theta Initiation

Yesterday Emily Kayes, Arin Liszka, and Carley Doyle were initiated into Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society.  Karen Robbins, the Phi Alpha Theta adviser, organized a very nice ceremony at the University Ministries.

Initiation into the Phi Alpha Theta

The History Department is pleased to initiate 16 new members into the national history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta, at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in the Thomas Merton Center.

The following students are being initiated, and friends and family are welcome: Sara E. Apenowich, Leah D. Brownstein, Jacob Mark Bunce, Rachel Wren Farrell, Anna M. Ciesla, Andrew Gagne, Michele’ J. Madonna, Chelsea O'Connor-Rosiek, Maximilian J. Schneller, Nicholas Siciliano, Michael James Specht, Christina Anne Stankewicz, Mariah Wolford, Kevin Joseph Yehl, Matthew Joseph Zaros, and Christina H. Zoppi.

Please note that any Phi Alpha Theta student who is graduating this May and who was initiated into the honorary society prior to this year may contact Dr. Karen Robbins if they are interested in wearing honor cords for graduation. The cost is $13.

Thursday, April 18, 2013: A Busy Day for History Majors!

Eight History Majors will present their research at the 2013 Arts & Sciences Exposition at St. Bonaventure University. On Thursday, April 18, a reception will be held in the Trustees Room from 11:30 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m., during which our eight students will stand by their posters and answer questions about their research projects.

On the same day, at 5 p.m., the History Department will initiate six new students into its national honor society, Phi Alpha Theta. The induction ceremony will take place in the Living Room of University Ministries, and there will be a small reception afterward. Please come and support our new members: Shannon Conheady, Harrison Leone, Jason Mahar, Alexandra McCumiskey, and Maria Swieciki.

History Major Jason Mahar to Present at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference

Jason Mahar, a senior majoring in history at St. Bonaventure University, will present at the 2013 Phi Alpha Theta Northeast Regional Conference. The conference will be held at Ramapo College of New Jersey on Sunday, April 20, 2013. The title of Jason's paper is "Albert Gallatin: A Visionary Clouded by Debt." Although Gallatin was the fourth Secretary of the Treasury who served under Jefferson and Madison, he has not received much attention by historians. To date, there is only a handful of biographies and one critique of his financial system. In his paper, Jason looks at Gallatin's tenure as Secretary of the Treasury, focusing on the flaws in his system of finance and his greater dreams for an interconnected America. Jason's research demonstrates how Gallatin's excessive focus on debt prevented his dreams from becoming reality during his time.
